Terror in Mumbai: personal update
A number of our friends from around the world have been calling in to ask about our welfare as this great city is under assault by an armed militant outfit of unknown affiliation. We are all okay and most people in our extended family and circle of friends are accounted for.
This attack has touched our lives quite closely: the two five-star hotels targeted are favorite haunts of the expat community. We spent the first two months of our new lives in India at the Oberoi. We know most of the staff at the hotel and the girls are very fond of several of them; we are worried about their situation. Several other targets are in the more upscale parts of town that we frequent.
We are watching both local and western media coverage of events here but it is somewhat appalling to watch CNN cast this as a hunt for westerners in this city. The violence has been indiscriminate and almost all but 6 of the casualties are reported to be locals. Couple of the hotels continue to be embroiled in a hostage situation but the rest of the city is already limping back to a semblance of normalcy.
More to come..
